Sneak Peek: Four Wheeler Magazine’s August Cover Features a Legit Owner-Built Ford Ranger on 42s!

Here’s an early look at Four Wheeler magazine’s August 2020 cover that hits newsstands June 26.

We love the opportunity to put a Ford Ranger on the cover of Four Wheeler magazine, and Tim Nichols' Ranger is very deserving of being front and center on the cover of the August 2020 issue.

It's Owner Built

When Tim purchased the truck its 4.0L engine wasn't running, but he soon remedied that. He then hit the trails and the trails hit back, often causing failure of the IFS CV 'shafts and rack-and-pinion assemblies. To remedy that problem, Tim, who was a senior in high school at the time, performed a SAS using a Dana 30. Problem solved. Sort of. The Dana 30 quickly broke, and it signaled the beginning of a slew of upgrades to the Ranger over the course of 11 years that culminated with 1-ton running gear, a 5.0L V-8, custom three-link front suspension with coilovers, 42-inch meats, and much more. The full story of Tim's Ranger is fascinating and inspiring.

A Ranger on the Cover Is Rare

A Ford Ranger on the cover of Four Wheeler magazine is rare, much like the rarity of the Dodge Dakota we had on the July 2020 cover. As a matter of fact, the last Ranger cover was the May 2019 issue when we had a Ranger-themed issue inspired by the return of the Ranger nameplate for the 2019 model year. Prior to that, Ranger covers were mega rare.

Anatomy of the Photo

When Four Wheeler magazine staff editor Jered Korfhage saw Tim and his Ranger in the California desert, he knew the truck deserved a closer look. Soon his Canon was recording images of the truck's features with special emphasis on nailing a shot that showed the detail of the front suspension and axle in vertical format, and the outstanding result is front and center on the cover.

But Wait, There's More!

The Four Wheeler magazine August 2020 cover also includes a photo of a really cool vintage Cadillac converted to 4WD found at the King Of The Hammers race, a shot of our 2019 Pickup Truck of the Year-winning long-term Ram Rebel 12, and a few of the 4x4s that were on the ROCO 4x4 trail adventure that wheeled from Vegas to Reno via the Rubicon.
