Which new diesel-powered pickup is the best?

Consumers have been waiting for years for the kind of diesel pickup options that we have today, from heavy-duty trucks making more than 1,000 lb-ft of torque to -tons achieving 33 mpg on the highway. It's certainly a great time to be in the market for a diesel truck. Below are all of the options for buying a diesel-powered truck in 2021.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra

In 2020 Chevrolet and GMC introduced an all-new engine for Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickups. This new engine is a 3.0L inline six-cylinder Duramax diesel that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The engine is available in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks in the LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country trims. GMC Sierra 1500 trucks get the diesel in all trims with the exception of the base Sierra trim. GM's 3.0L diesel is a bargain, costing just $1,000 more than a 5.3L V-8, and $1,000 less than the big 6.2L V-8.

Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD can be equipped with the 6.6L Duramax diesel V-8. This engine is carryover from 2017, however it received a new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission in 2020. When properly equipped, these trucks tow up to 36,000 pounds. The Duramax diesel is available in all trims and cab configurations of GM's heavy-duty pickups and is about $10,000 more than the base 6.6L gasoline V-8.

2021 Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon

GM offers the fantastic 2.8L Duramax diesel in its line of Canyon and Colorado midsize pickups. At just 181 hp these trucks may seem a bit down on power, however their 369 lb-ft of torque more than make up for the horsepower deficiency. Backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, these trucks are rated for up to 30 mpg on the highway. The 2.8L Duramax costs between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on trim (it's least expensive for ZR2). If you want one we'd suggest acting fast, as GM has announced that it's going to be shutting down the plant where this engine is built in the near future.

2021 Ford F-Series

For 2021 Ford is once again bringing back the 3.0L PowerStroke V-6 for its F-150 line of pickups. Power and torque remain the same from the 2020 model year, and fuel economy figures for the new body style truck have yet to be released. The engine will be available in trims from XLT to Platinum, and costs between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on trim.

For 2020 Ford released the third generation of its 6.7L PowerStroke diesel V-8 for its Super Duty line of heavy-duty trucks. This engine makes a best-in-class 445 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. And to make things better, all trucks from the most basic Ford F-250 to the big-hoss F-450 get the full 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The 6.7L PowerStroke is a $10,495 option over the base 6.2L V-8.

2021 Ram Trucks

Ram recently released its third-generation 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6, which now makes 260 hp and a best-in-class 480 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, a Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 can achieve 32 mpg on the highway and tow up to 12,560 pounds. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 is a $4,995 option on all trims of Ram 1500.

For Ram's 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups there are two choices of diesel engine. Both are identical 6.7L Cummins I-6 engines, however the High-Output version both makes more power and costs more money. The base engine is available in both 2500 and 3500 model trucks, however, to get the High-Output option you'll need to bump up to a 3500. The standard Cummins engine is a $9,600 option, while the High-Output version will set you back $12,195.

2021 Jeep Gladiator

When Jeep introduced the all-new Gladiator pickup for the 2020 model year it launched with just one engine option, the gasoline 3.6L V-6. While this engine is decent enough, Jeep fanatics were excited to hear that for 2021 Gladiator would be offered with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6, as well. This engine is the same third-generation unit used the Ram 1500 pickup; however, power ratings have been reduced slightly. We're not super stoked that tow ratings for the diesel are lower than its gas counterpart, but the 28-mpg highway rating is welcome. Getting into the EcoDiesel will cost Gladiator buyers nearly $6,000, after the upcharge for the engine and automatic transmission.
